What Is Xiangyunsha Silk? A Traditional Eastern Silk Explained

Xiangyunsha Silk is a traditional Chinese silk fabric known for its warm bronze tones and soft, matte sheen. Although it looks very different from the glossy silk people are familiar with, Xiangyunsha is in fact a type of mulberry silk. What makes it unique is not the fiber, but its rare dyeing and finishing process that has been passed down for centuries.

What Is Xiangyunsha Silk?

Xiangyunsha, sometimes called “Canton silk,” begins as fine mulberry silk. Through a series of plant-dyeing, sun-drying and mineral-rich mud finishing steps, the fabric develops its signature earthy color and slightly weathered texture. The name translates to “fragrant cloud silk,” reflecting both its softness and its poetic appearance.

How Is Xiangyunsha Silk Made?

The character of Xiangyunsha comes from a slow, meticulous process:

  • Plant dyeing: The silk is repeatedly dyed with an extract from the wild yam root (Dioscorea cirrhosa), giving it a deep, natural brown tone.

  • Sun drying: The fabric is laid out under open sunlight, allowing heat and light to deepen the colour.

  • Mud finishing: Craftsmen apply mineral-rich river mud, which bonds with the fibres and adds strength, a cool touch and a subtle sheen.

Because every step relies on weather, sunlight and handwork, no two pieces of Xiangyunsha are exactly alike. This natural variation is part of what makes the fabric so appealing.

Where Is Xiangyunsha Silk Used?

Historically, Xiangyunsha was widely used for clothing such as qipao, jackets, shirts and loose trousers. The silk feels cool against the skin, drapes beautifully and holds colour in a soft, natural way. Modern designers now use it in dresses, lightweight coats and scarves, giving traditional fabric a contemporary look.

It also works remarkably well in accessories. The fabric’s bronze glow and matte texture make it a striking material for handbags, clutches and smaller fashion pieces. Its neutral tones pair easily with minimalist outfits, allowing the texture of the fabric to become the highlight.
