Free leather saddle bag pattern - Babylon Leather

If you’ve been wanting to make your own leather saddle bag but weren’t sure where to begin, this little project might be exactly what you need. We’re sharing a Free PDF Pattern for a simple, classic saddle-style bag — clean lines, soft curves, and just the right size for daily use.

It’s beginner-friendly, easy to customize, and a wonderfully relaxing weekend craft. And yes — the pattern is completely free to download.

About This Pattern

This download includes a single, full-size printable PDF pattern for the saddle bag. Simply print the pages at 100% scale, cut out the outlines, and trace them onto your leather.

The template provides the basic shapes needed for the project — the curved flap, body panel, gusset area, and strap placement guides. It’s a clean, straightforward layout designed to help you start cutting without measuring or drafting from scratch.

This pattern gives you the foundation of the bag, while leaving plenty of room to customize your stitching style, hardware choices, and finishing details.

Tools & Materials

You don’t need a workshop full of tools to make this bag. A few basics will do:

  • Veg-tanned or full-grain leather
  • Craft knife or rotary cutter
  • Ruler and cutting mat
  • Stitching holes (punched by hand or machine)
  • Needles and waxed thread
  • Your choice of hardware (buckle, rivets, magnetic clasp…)

Optional tools like edge bevelers or burnishers are great, but not required.

How to Use the Pattern

  1. Download the PDF
  2. Print at 100% scale on A3 or Letter paper
  3. Cut out the paper pieces
  4. Place them on your leather and trace the outlines
  5. Cut the leather pieces cleanly along the curves
  6. Punch stitching holes if needed
  7. Assemble everything with hand stitching or a sewing machine
  8. Add your strap and hardware

It’s a simple, meditative process — and once you finish, you’ll have a bag that looks beautifully handmade.
