Before You Choose a Pattern From Babylon Leather
Understanding Our Leather Patterns: Who They’re For and How to Choose the Right Option
Our patterns are designed for makers who are already comfortable working independently with leather — including cutting, hole punching, stitching order, and construction logic.
If you are new to leathercraft, using a pattern alone may feel far more challenging than expected. This is not because beginners lack ability, but because early experiences play a critical role in building confidence and enjoyment.
Why Leather Patterns Are Not Ideal for Beginners
For beginners, the most important part of leathercraft is not technical difficulty — it is the joy of making something by hand and the sense of satisfaction that comes from completing a successful project.
When working with a pattern only, beginners must prepare many things on their own: purchasing suitable leather, gathering various tools, cutting leather accurately, punching stitching holes, and determining the correct construction and stitching order.
These steps involve multiple skills that beginners are still developing. Even small mistakes early in the process can quickly lead to frustration, reduced motivation, and discouragement — sometimes before a finished result is ever achieved.
That is why choosing the right starting point matters.

For beginners or anyone who prefers a guided, stress-free experience, our DIY leather kits offer a more approachable and rewarding way to start leathercraft.
Each DIY kit includes detailed step-by-step video tutorials, all essential tools required during the stitching process, and pre-cut leather pieces with precisely punched stitching holes.
By removing the most intimidating steps — cutting, measuring, and hole punching — the project becomes much easier to complete successfully. Beginners can focus on the hands-on stitching experience and truly enjoy the creative process.
Completing a project from start to finish builds confidence, motivation, and a genuine sense of achievement — often the moment people fall in love with leathercraft.

For experienced leathercrafters who prefer working independently, this pattern is available in the following formats:
- Kraft Board Pattern — A traditional physical template designed for repeated workshop use.
- Acrylic Board Pattern — A durable, precision template intended for long-term accuracy.
- PDF Pattern — A digital reference created from a full-scale scan of the original physical template.
Notes on the PDF Pattern
The PDF version is produced by scanning the original acrylic template at a 1:1 scale. Because it is derived from a physical template rather than a digitally drawn file, minor dimensional tolerances may occur. We recommend checking key measurements before cutting leather.
Please note that the PDF is based on an A3-size template and is not formatted for direct printing on standard home printers unless you have access to an A3 printer.
If you need to print the pattern on A4 paper, the A3 pages must be split accordingly. One tool that may help with this process is:
