It’s an important question — especially when the market is filled with bonded leather, PU leather, “vegan leather,” and other synthetic materials that often look similar at first glance.

1. Look at the Surface: Real Leather Has Natural Pores

Real leather comes from animal hide, so its surface carries tiny irregular pores, subtle grain variations, and natural imperfections — just like human skin. No two areas look exactly the same.

Fake leather, on the other hand, usually has a perfectly uniform texture because it’s printed by a machine. The grain pattern often repeats, and the surface can look “too smooth” or “too plastic.”

2. Touch and Feel: Real Leather Is Warm and Flexible

When you press your fingers into real leather, the surface will slightly sink and bounce back slowly. It feels warm, soft, and flexible with a natural elasticity.

PU leather and other synthetics feel colder and stiffer. Pressing them usually leaves no temporary marks, and the material may feel plasticky or overly smooth.

3. Smell Test: Genuine Leather Has a Distinct Natural Scent

When you gently bend or fold real leather, the surface forms soft wrinkles and slight color changes. These creases disappear gradually when released.

Fake leather keeps the same surface with almost no reaction. Some PU leather may even crack if bent too far.
