How to Tell Real Leather From Fake Leather: A Practical Guide

At Babylon Leather, we work with full-grain and top-grain leather every day. And one thing we hear all the time is: “How do I know if it’s real leather?”

It’s an important question — especially when the market is filled with bonded leather, PU leather, “vegan leather,” and other synthetic materials that often look similar at first glance.

This guide will walk you through simple, reliable ways to tell genuine leather from fake leather, even if you’re new to leathercraft or buying leather goods for the first time.

1. Look at the Surface: Real Leather Has Natural Pores

Real leather comes from animal hide, so its surface carries tiny irregular pores, subtle grain variations, and natural imperfections — just like human skin. No two areas look exactly the same.

Fake leather, on the other hand, usually has a perfectly uniform texture because it’s printed by a machine. The grain pattern often repeats, and the surface can look “too smooth” or “too plastic.”

2. Touch and Feel: Real Leather Is Warm and Flexible

When you press your fingers into real leather, the surface will slightly sink and bounce back slowly. It feels warm, soft, and flexible with a natural elasticity.

PU leather and other synthetics feel colder and stiffer. Pressing them usually leaves no temporary marks, and the material may feel plasticky or overly smooth.

3. Smell Test: Genuine Leather Has a Distinct Natural Scent

Real leather has a unique, earthy smell that’s hard to replicate. It comes from the tanning process and the natural fibers within the hide.

Fake leather often has a chemical or plastic-like odor due to artificial coatings and adhesives.

4. Check the Edges: Real Leather Has Fiber, Not Plastic

Look closely at the cut edge:

  • Real leather reveals tiny natural fibers, slightly rough and layered.
  • Fake leather has smooth, sealed, or plastic-like edges.

If the edge looks like compressed paper or tightly sealed plastic, it’s likely synthetic.

5. Bend Test: Real Leather Shows Natural Wrinkles

When you gently bend or fold real leather, the surface forms soft wrinkles and slight color changes. These creases disappear gradually when released.

Fake leather keeps the same surface with almost no reaction. Some PU leather may even crack if bent too far.

6. Don’t Rely on Labels Alone

Many products use marketing terms like “vegan leather,” “synthetic leather,” or “leatherette,” which all refer to faux leather. Meanwhile, real leather is usually labeled as:

  • Full-grain leather
  • Top-grain leather
  • Genuine leather
  • Split leather

But because product labels vary by region and brand, physical inspection is always more reliable.

I had to skive to insert bag stud screws. To my amazement the skived “leather” is plastic. It can be pulled and stretched like elastic. I demand a refund before going to PayPal and internet forums to expose this misrepresentation. I have bought many kits, some waiting to be assembled. I have been duped!
